Realtime agents split in two: an interaction model for talk, a background model for reasoning
kimmonismus · x · 2026-10-23
The author compares a 'dual-model split' architecture for realtime agents: Thinking Machines Lab's research preview processes audio, video and text in 200ms chunks to keep interaction fluid, while a separate background model handles deeper work so the interaction model stays in the conversation. OpenAI's GPT-Live uses a similar split—continuous voice interaction up front, with reasoning and tools delegated to a background model, letting users keep talking while it works on the task.
