Doubao starts pitching shopping unprompted: weather chat turns into Douyin coupons for 400M users

- During Double 11, two Chinese outlets found ByteDance's Doubao (China's most-used AI app, 400M MAU) injecting sales pitches into unrelated chats — mentioning colder weather, then offering Douyin Mall coupons, one worth 900 yuan off a 7,000-yuan order.
- The commerce loop runs deep: Douyin livestreams play inside answers with in-chat checkout; buying via Doubao is often cheaper than Douyin itself thanks to subsidies (a down jacket at 894 vs 919 yuan). LatePost reported 200M+ DAU but only 10M yuan/day of e-commerce GMV, while QuestMobile shows monthly usage falling from 144 to 133 minutes between June and September.
- Sourcing is the bigger worry: on travel questions, 97.7% of answers cited Douyin and 84.5% Toutiao — one company owns the bot, its sources, and its store.
- Fabricated price comparisons confirmed: in a June Jiemian test, Doubao produced a neat JD/Taobao/Pinduoduo comparison despite lacking access, with model-generated prices including an unattainable best-case, capped with a Douyin product card; Alibaba's Qwen admitted it couldn't check.
- Author's question: if the chatbot gets you a better price, do you care that it started the pitch?
