eLife 'Landmark' paper: RNNs reveal a mechanistic theory of planning in prefrontal cortex
ShahabBakht · x · 2026-10-22
Kristopher T Jensen, Timothy Behrens and colleagues (Oxford/UCL, Gatsby Unit) published an open-access eLife paper proposing a mechanistic theory of goal-directed planning in prefrontal cortex using recurrent neural networks. eLife rated the findings 'Fundamental/Landmark' with 'Compelling' evidence: the work links a computational model to prior neural data, provides a hand-crafted implementation of the mechanism, and shows trained RNNs converge to the same computational principles.
