Retail is splitting over autonomous AI shopping agents, per TechCrunch: Amazon and several travel/booking sites are blocking AI agents from purchasing on behalf of shoppers, while Walmart is launching its own Agent Gateway to manage agent-driven transactions, plus new features for AI-agent customers.
Walmart had already partnered with Meta's Muse and offers integrations with popular AI apps like ChatGPT and Gemini. CEO John Furner said at the Masters of Scale Summit the moves prepare Walmart for a world where AI agents go mainstream.
