UC Berkeley and Dr. Ziad Obermeyer received the Academic Discovery of the Year Award from California Life Sciences for an AI research breakthrough: a deep learning-derived ECG biomarker for sudden cardiac death risk stratification.
The biomarker helps doctors identify patients who could benefit from a defibrillator before a fatal event occurs, enabling earlier intervention. California Life Sciences called the discovery the kind of innovation that keeps California at the forefront of life sciences. The award will be presented at the 23rd Annual Pantheon Awards on November 12, 2026, in San Francisco.
