Only 25% of snow particles simulated: the particle budget trick behind Endless Powder
sterlingcrispin · x · 2026-10-22
sterlingcrispin breaks down the three systems driving reactive snow in Endless Powder: projectile spray, a mist ribbon behind fast carves, and clumps landing to build up or dent the surface.
For compute budget reasons only 25% of fine particles are simulated; each landing can seed up to four neighboring dents, faking full simulation. Big chunks are always computed since a large piece visibly failing to land breaks the illusion. The board shape is projected to 2D respecting rotation and angle, so toeside rides leave thin slices and slash stops dig deep — and you can dismount, climb and throw snowballs.
