Show HN: Omnara, an open-source alternative to Claude Managed Agents
kmansm27 · hn · 2026-10-22
Omnara launched on HN as an open-source API for running durable agents, positioned as a self-hosted alternative to Claude Managed Agents and the OpenAI Agents API:
- Core: create an agent with one API call; Omnara runs the agent loop, provides sandboxes, and handles secrets, permissions, and RBAC; message agents and stream events over the API.
- Durability: agent state lives in Postgres, survives restarts, costs nothing while idle; your laptop can serve as one of the agent's machines.
- Architecture: unlike harnesses (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode) that run a long-lived loop with JSONL/SQLite logs, Omnara uses an append-only Postgres event log with typed tables for inputs, outputs, and tool calls, executed by stateless workers.
- Full harness features: file/shell tools, subagents, compaction, permission prompts, MCP, skills, memory.
- The team previously built a phone app for remote-controlling Claude Code/Codex and moved to a cloud-native design.
