Railway discloses breach of encrypted env vars, tied to attacks on AI inference providers
josh_bickett · x · 2026-10-22
Railway disclosed a security incident on Oct 21: an unauthorized third party may have accessed customer environment variables, and for some of them obtained decrypted contents — potentially exposing API keys and database/registry credentials.
Key points:
- Railway believes this is part of a recent series of attacks targeting platform companies with the aim of compromising AI inference providers, and has proactively notified upstream providers to revoke all keys.
- All users are strongly advised to immediately roll all environment variables stored in Railway (including API keys) and private registry credentials, and review service logs for unusual activity.
- Impact appears limited to a subset of users, but all deployments are paused while the investigation continues; affected customers will be contacted by email.
