Bratton: aligning one AI to 'universal human values' risks a global cognitive monoculture
bratton · x · 2026-10-22
In a new essay with Blaise Agüera y Arcas and James Manyika at the DeepMind Institute, Benjamin Bratton argues AGI may arrive not as one titanic mind but as societies of agents, shifting the hard problem to orchestrating and governing many minds. He warns that building a single model aligned to 'universal human values' set by some eval is 'a recipe for a global cognitive monoculture' — incredibly brittle, and contrary to how healthy ecologies work. He frames AI as deeply continuous with human evolution rather than a radical break.
