Musk: Tesla needs 10,000-20,000 Optimus bots doing self-play to bootstrap training data
XFreeze · x · 2026-10-22
Elon Musk explained how Tesla trains Optimus: unlike its cars, there's no vast existing fleet to harvest data from, so Tesla must bootstrap by building roughly 10,000-20,000 bots that learn via self-play across a wide range of tasks, feeding a data flywheel.
The company is building an "Optimus academy" where the robots practice at scale. Musk likened the process to how toddlers learn—wobbling, making mistakes, and improving through play—arguing that play at scale is the key to real-world competence.
