Microsoft's annual report shows the company employed about 223,000 people as of June 30th, down 5,000 from 228,000 the prior year — the first year-over-year headcount reduction since the Nokia phone business wind-down in 2015-2016. The company has laid off more than 9,000 employees over the past year.
