Survey: representation learning and generative modelling are converging in four phases
AllThingsApx · x · 2026-10-22
Kieran Didi's living survey (updated through Sept 2026) maps the convergence of visual representation learning and generative modelling: from latent diffusion and self-supervised foundation models, through four phases (diffusion-feature alignment → VAE latent alignment → generating directly in foundation-model feature spaces → questioning the need for pretrained representations), to the reverse direction where generative models learn strong representations, with applications in molecular ML. A cross-cutting analysis covers rate, geometry, spectrum and robustness.
