Speculative decoding's tradeoff: acceptance rate α = 1 − TV(p,q) vs. draft speed
cneuralnetwork · x · 2026-10-22
The thread's conclusion covers the actual speedup and its tradeoffs:
- The expected acceptance probability at a given prefix is α = Σₓ min(p(x), q(x)) = 1 − TV(p, q), where TV is total variation distance;
- A draft model that closely approximates the target accepts longer prefixes and yields more tokens per verification pass;
- But a larger draft also drafts more slowly — the fundamental tradeoff between acceptance rate and drafting speed.
