GPU_MODE meetup hands out fake 'NVIDIA Department of Data Consistency' violation notices
yaroslavvb · x · 2026-10-22
At a GPUMODE meetup, yaroslavvb (author of GPU Kernels) received a gag prop: a mock "State of NVIDIA — Department of Data Consistency, Notice of Violation" form, styled like an official citation complete with an NVIDIA-logo "official seal."
The form lists 12 alleged violations, all real GPU memory-model pitfalls: improper assumptions of Total Store Ordering, uncontrolled stream aliasing, missing memory barriers, reliance on implicit synchronization beyond the API contract, wrong atomics memory ordering, failure to establish happens-before relationships, data races, and improper assumptions of non-guaranteed co-scheduling across kernels or copy engines. It even includes an "Observed Behavior / Evidence Summary" field and corrective-action checkboxes for code review and repro tests.
For anyone who has written CUDA kernels and hit memory-consistency bugs, every line item lands — a high-effort bit of community humor.
