IFP Report: US Lead Over China in AI Is Only About 6 Months, Policy Could Double It

The Institute for Progress (IFP) published a 23,000-word report six months in the making, examining how Chinese AI companies' access to compute and distillation of American models translate into the current US-China capabilities gap. It includes an interactive analytical model visualizing how the US lead changes under different policy interventions.
Key findings:
- The US AI lead over China is currently only around 6 months.
- Using authorities already available to the federal government, the US could roughly double this lead to over a year.
- China's access to AI chips will roughly double (thread truncated).
