Investors ignore your advisor list — here's how to split equity between the two advisor types
dunkhippo33 · x · 2026-10-22
dunkhippo33 on advisor equity for first-time founders: marquee advisors matter far less than founders think — investors mostly ignore advisor lists since advisors aren't doing the work.
- Two kinds of advisors, compensated very differently
- Hands-on advisors: active GTM via their network or deep expertise — basically part-time employees, deserving 0.1-2% with up to 4-year vesting
- Advice-only advisors: a monthly/quarterly call; most advisors are here — roughly 0.1% vesting over up to 2 years
Key warning: never give equity without vesting, and don't waste precious equity that should go to employees.
