Stanford's Division of Computational Medicine hosted an "AI in Oncology" colloquium with Jakob Nikolas Kather, senior author of the Nature paper "Towards autonomous medical artificial intelligence agents." The paper argues that while LLMs show great potential for clinical decision-making, most applications remain narrow, task-specific chat tools; true physician copilots must operate inside the EHR with governed access to patient data.
Key points:
- Two impact areas in oncology: extracting quantitative insights from routinely collected medical data (including histopathology images) to predict cancer outcomes, treatment response, genetic alterations and gene expression; and LLM agents that reason, plan and act, interacting with external software and databases, even aiding drug design and treatment strategy.
- Potential benefits: reduced clinician workload, more consistent reporting, and revealing previously hidden patterns.
- Kather holds the Hopp Foundation Professorship for AI in Medicine at Heidelberg, founded the Institute for Medical AI at Heidelberg University Hospital, holds an ERC Starting Grant (NADIR), and has 300+ peer-reviewed publications.
The talk took place Thursday, October 22, 12:00-1:00pm PT at Tapao Hall, Palo Alto, with a livestream (Webinar ID 978 8759 6012, passcode 420642).
