Blogger rates SSL cert vulnerability 3.0 on his self-made 'Richter scale for outages'
genmon · x · 2026-10-22
genmon applies his 2015 'Richter scale for outages' framework (from Interconnected) to the recent SSL certificate vulnerability and its PHP follow-up, rating it 3.0 — where 4.0 means 'broad human inconvenience without threat.'
The scale increases tenfold per magnitude: sub-2.0 is indistinguishable from normal network noise; 2.0 covers outages like Facebook/Gmail downtime fixed within a day; 4.0 is a broad freeze recoverable by reboot. He warns to watch for 6.0-7.0 'aftershocks' from mass follow-up exploits, given how centralized and emergently coupled modern software systems are.
