More samples, less floor: digline author details a 36.7% false-positive flaw in LLM regression gating
alexpran · reddit · 2026-10-22
The author of digline, an open-source regression gate for LLM apps, self-reports a design flaw: using min/max over K reference samples makes the noise band widen with K (median band width 0.117 at K=2, 0.300 at K=5, 0.483 at K=31). In tests, 21 identical runs triggered up to 36.7% false flags across 420 pairs. The fix: paired per-case differences plus a printed detection floor. His advice to anyone running a model grader: run the same cases twice with nothing changed and measure what moves.
