FunCAD generates working, 3D-printable CAD mechanisms from a single text prompt
jonLorraine9 · x · 2026-10-22
A CUHK-Shenzhen/CUHK team introduces FunCAD, which invents physically functional CAD mechanisms from a one-line text goal with zero reference images—benchmarked against GPT-6 Astra's 3D demos, which they argue reflect interface fluency rather than physical understanding. FunCAD-Harness turns each requirement into a rigid-body physics test bound to the candidate's own parts for closed-loop revision; FunCADBench covers 46 mechanism families and 75 agent-built assemblies, with Grok (retained history) solving 36/46 within 8 attempts and Astra improving from 8 to 22 solved tasks. Some designs were 3D-printed into working prototypes.
