David Patterson: The ChatGPT Moment for Robots Will Come From ChatGPT Itself
davidpattersonx · x · 2026-10-21
Turing Award winner David Patterson argues that making robots do full jobs is not a robotics problem but a general intelligence problem. Perception, understanding and planning will be handled by general models like ChatGPT, meaning an inexpensive robot with simple claw hands could do 80% of jobs. In his view, the robot hardware matters less than the general intelligence model controlling it, and models are rapidly getting better at understanding the visual world and controlling robots, aircraft, and vehicles — putting the robot's 'ChatGPT moment' in the hands of LLM makers rather than robotics companies.
