ChatGPT's 'memory full' limit hits users after 4-15 messages, even paid tiers
CommercialLynx1791 · reddit · 2026-10-21
A Reddit user compiled reports of ChatGPT's new "chat memory full" limit: conversations cap out at roughly 4-15 messages (1,750 words), forcing users into new chats. Free users and Plus subscribers (50-message limit) are both affected, old and new chats alike.
Testing showed branching and message editing don't bypass it; OpenAI support only suggested using a VPN or blamed a "wacky" model. The "continue in a new chat" feature spawns endless summary chats that clutter the sidebar.
The author can't confirm whether it's a bug or an intentional decision, but urges users not to delete their memory as a fix — if it persists, long-conversation users (roleplay, writing, business) may migrate to other models.
