OpenAI offered 100% off to stop a cancellation, charged twice, then stalled for 6 weeks

A Reddit user details a six-week billing dispute with OpenAI over £16.67:
- In August, while cancelling ChatGPT Plus via the Codex desktop app, he accepted a retention offer of 100% off for a month. His billing page then showed "You've got 100% off Plus."
- He was charged £16.67 on September 8 anyway. Support gave contradictory answers — some demanded a nonexistent promo code, others said the discount applied only in October.
- On September 27, support confirmed in writing that "no additional action is required" and the promotion would apply to the billing period starting October 8, 2026.
- On October 8 he was charged another £16.67. The billing page still showed 100% off, but the discounted renewal date had moved to November 8.
- Escalated agents acknowledged the contradiction but couldn't manually fix the promotion or guarantee November would be free. Higher-tier support then asked him to screenshot OpenAI's own confirmation email — already in the case file. The irony: he was cancelling in the first place.
