SOMA open-sources AI CAD: Claude Code writes CadQuery models, self-checks collisions and FEM
Lazar988 · reddit · 2026-10-21
A developer open-sourced SOMA, an app that lets Claude Code do CAD for you.
- How it works: Claude writes models as Python with CadQuery; SOMA rebuilds on every save and shows the result in 3D. Claude runs in a normal terminal inside the app using your own subscription — no wrapper, no extra API key. Also works with Codex, OpenCode, and Gemini CLI.
- Self-checking loop: SOMA gives Claude a CLI to build, measure distances, check collisions, run FEM, and render images to visually verify its own output.
- Interaction: click a part or draw on the 3D view and send it as a screenshot ("this hole is too small"); every step is logged with history/rollback.
- Ships with AGENTS.md rules and skills for 3D printing, CNC, and sheet metal. Handles large assemblies (the CNC mill in the video has 118 parts), hand-drawn sketch starting points, and existing STEP files. SOMA itself was mostly written with Claude Code. Free, GPL, Windows/Mac/Linux.
