Outlook IMAP "authenticated but not connected" traced to fresh logins: 60% refusal vs 6% on reused connections
Mailbox-MCP · reddit · 2026-10-21
Mailbox-MCP dug through 3 days of call logs after a user hit Outlook.com/Hotmail OAuth refusals on 30% of requests and found a clear pattern: reusing an open IMAP connection got refused 6% of the time, while fresh LOGINs were refused 60% — Microsoft is rejecting new sign-ins, not sessions. Their server closing idle IMAP connections after 2 minutes forced a fresh login at every pause, which explains the failures. Retries after 3 seconds barely help since refusals come in multi-minute runs; they're now testing 10-minute keep-alives and avoiding parallel connections for affected accounts.
