DeepMind Opens SynthID Detector, Launches Protein Watermarking in Provenance Push
pushmeet · x · 2026-10-21
Pushmeet Kohli of Google DeepMind recapped SynthID's recent milestones: opening SynthID Detector to the public and launching SynthID Bio to watermark functional, AI-designed proteins.
In a conversation with Dartmouth professor Hany Farid on Google's Public Policy blog, he argued that provenance is vital to DeepMind's mission:
- Solving provenance is a highly complex, multi-disciplinary effort with watermarking at its core
- It requires frontier research, interoperable open standards, and direct collaboration across platforms and developers
- The goal is helping verify what is AI-generated and what isn't
DeepMind is pushing provenance from a single technique toward platform-scale, standards-based infrastructure.
