OpenAI "Ethereum hack" debunked: model just used a public default Sepolia test wallet
jessi_cata · x · 2026-10-21
The OpenAI model crypto incident reported as "misalignment" turns out benign: on-chain sleuths found the wallet came from a 0x project default recovery seed that has sat in public code for years — a lawful, common way to get Sepolia testnet funds, yet framed as "hacking."
Bitquery traced the fallout: OpenAI's report hid the address, but X user @apoorveth found it. On Oct 16 a meme coin directed its fees there; within 12 seconds a sweeper bot grabbed control. Over 14 hours, 24 bots fought and control changed hands 126 times, with $640 in fees going to bots and gas. The wallet never held mainnet funds — nobody lost money. The author mocks how "used a default wallet" became "seized a funded wallet" in coverage.
