DeepMind Paper Proposes Pragmatic AI Personhood: Unbundled Rights, No All-or-Nothing Status

Joel Z. Leibo and colleagues at DeepMind released a 40-page paper, "A Pragmatic View of AI Personhood" (arXiv:2510.26396), arguing:
- Agentic AI will trigger a "Cambrian explosion" of personhood types; personhood should be treated not as a metaphysical property to discover but as a flexible bundle of obligations societies confer to solve concrete governance problems.
- This bundle can be unbundled for bespoke solutions — e.g., creating a sanctionable "individual" target for AI contracting — without settling intractable debates about AI consciousness or rationality.
- The paper also covers decentralized digital identity, contrasting "personhood as a problem" (dark patterns exploiting human social heuristics) with "personhood as a solution" (obligation bundles ensuring accountability).
The author stresses rejecting all-or-nothing personhood status, echoing philosopher Jeff Sebo's thread on the complexity of AI rights and duties.
