Meta pauses layoffs as AI agents underdeliver; Microsoft slashes internal AI budgets

Big Tech is recalculating its AI efficiency math. Meta paused its November restructuring: Project OT aimed to replace 10-20 person teams with 3-5 person "Pods" (up to 60% cuts) and trained agents on keystroke-tracking of employees — but code changes grew 220% while user-visible features grew only 36%, and major security incidents rose 40%. Zuckerberg admitted misjudging agent progress and cut Claude spending. Microsoft's internal review found AI deployment didn't deliver expected business results: its LinkedIn chief described an AI-summarizing-AI-documents "Doom Loop"; internal Anthropic spending estimates were cut by over a third, and per-employee monthly model budgets dropped from up to $100K to $10K. An EY survey found 36% of large companies have suffered material AI incidents.
