Show HN: Dovepass tells drone operators if a route through SF is legal to fly
nimitmehra · hn · 2026-10-20
A Show HN project, Dovepass answers one question for drone operators: given two points, can a drone legally fly between them?
- Unlike road navigation, it must combine building/height data, wind speed and direction, total load, and federal/state/county rules
- The same route can flip from Go to No-Go within hours: a 5.1 km SF route costs a DJI Mini 4 Pro 92% battery in 7mph west winds (Go with warning) but 111% at 11mph (No-Go)
- Temporary TFRs are included: within 3 nautical miles of Oracle Park, all drone flights are barred 1 hour before to 1 hour after Giants games
- SF was chosen first for 92% building coverage, wind data at flight altitude, and a mix of slopes, water, airport airspace, and park rules
- The author mentions using Kimi during development
