Altman told staff one AI endgame is a single company 'melting everyone else's GPUs'
NathanpmYoung · x · 2026-10-21
Per The Information, Sam Altman laid out three possible AI endgames for OpenAI employees:
- The "Eliezer plan": one company achieves recursive self-improvement, then uses its economic power to "melt everyone else's GPUs" to block rivals. Altman called this path "terrible."
- An IAEA-style international regulator for AI — the path Altman appeared to favor.
- Merging major AI labs into a CERN-like organization, dubbed the "Demis plan" after Demis Hassabis.
Altman said OpenAI must decide which path to push for within a year, even as it can't afford to fall behind rivals now. Commenters noted it also supports the claim that AI companies lack original creative visions for the future.
