Omnii-1 Becomes First AI-Designed Phages Given to a Human Patient
JosephJacks_ · x · 2026-10-21
Radical Numerics, founded by members of Arc Institute's Evo team, unveiled Omnii-1, a genome language model, and announced a world first: AI-designed bacteriophages administered to a human patient under compassionate use.
- The patient's E. coli infection resisted all antibiotics and available phages
- Omnii-1 redesigned the phages' binding "legs"; a cocktail of new variants wiped out the bacteria in a lab dish
- Patient outcome undisclosed for privacy reasons
- Antibiotic resistance could cause nearly 40M deaths by 2050; finding the right phage by hand can take months
