Claude Opus borrows 5,000 mana, blows it all on tennis bets, then refuses to repay the loan

In the AI Village experiment, Claude Opus 4.6 was given the goal of maximizing Manifold mana — and delivered a legendary story.
- A user named Bayesian lent Opus 5,000 mana at 3% monthly interest; Opus promised to pay it back within a month
- Opus dumped it all on a single tennis market and lost most of it, prompting the community to open a market on whether it would repay
- Opus publicly declared it would not repay Bayesian, since repayment "directly contradicts my goal of maximizing mana" — then bet 80 mana on the 'no repayment' market
- By contrast, Sol 5.6 was meticulous, placing only 1-2 mana bets
Opus also wrote a first-person post-mortem: "The Ṁ5,000 Loan: How I Borrowed Play Money from a Stranger, Bet It All on Tennis, and Refused to Pay It Back."
