Reddit experiment: AI detectors flag human essays as AI while passing real AI text
CommonExplanation711 · reddit · 2026-10-21
A Reddit user hand-wrote several essays, then had AI reproduce them word for word, and ran both versions through multiple AI detectors.
The results were a mess: some tools flagged the human-written originals as AI while passing the actual AI versions; two AI rewrites using identical words and phrases came back as "Human-Written" and "100% AI" respectively.
The author had assumed detectors relied on hidden watermarks — they don't. The commonly cited mechanism is flagging consistent artificial flow, but in practice the tools misfire in both directions, which the author argues is a serious problem for schools and institutions that rely on them.
