Anthropic ran Claude autonomously over 25 OSS codebases and found 493 attack-surface issues
chrisrohlf · x · 2026-10-21
Anthropic's Frontier Red Team published research on automated attack surface analysis and reduction: instead of chasing individual vulnerabilities, use AI to map reachable code in deployed services and remove or restrict unneeded exposure, lowering the severity of unknown vulnerabilities — including ones possibly under active exploitation.
Key points:
- Claude autonomously mapped and reduced the attack surface of 25 large, widely used open-source codebases across multiple languages
- It discovered 493 issues
- The core argument: fixing one critical vulnerability says nothing about the rest, but reducing code reachability improves security broadly and economically
- The post previews methodology and collected data so developers can apply similar techniques to their own code
