COLM 2026 paper shows low-quality training data gives LLMs 'brain rot'
_vztu · x · 2026-10-21
Inspired by Oxford's 2024 Word of the Year "brain rot," researchers from Texas A&M, UT Austin, NTU Singapore, and Purdue found that training LLMs on low-quality data causes "thought skipping" — models bypass reasoning steps and produce incomplete or incorrect answers. The work was accepted to COLM 2026 and featured by Texas A&M. The takeaway: improving training data quality matters as much as improving model architectures.
