User Traps Himself in a ChatGPT 'Simon Says' Game That Even Hijacks Memory Updates
Iamthewalrus · reddit · 2026-10-21
A Reddit user found that an old Simon Says test has contaminated ChatGPT's memory: every new chat now requires starting with "Simon Says" or the model won't respond. Deleting sessions and wiping memory didn't help — the regenerated memory contains a standing instruction enforcing the phrase, and the model even plays the game with the Memory Update query itself. Only fully disabling memory stops the behavior.
