Google DeepMind & MIT study: verification is the next bottleneck for AI in science
AnneliesGamble · x · 2026-10-21
Based on AI in Science: Early Insights, a recent study by Google, Google DeepMind, and MIT FutureTech, this article discusses with Mihai Codreanu how AI can turn scientific hypotheses into discoveries.
Key insight: AI will accelerate discovery most in fields where hypotheses can be tested computationally, since computational disciplines can close the entire loop in silico. Even so, constraints remain: access to compute, the cost of large simulations, and high-quality data and benchmarks.
Across all fields, a downstream bottleneck persists — the cost of verification, which requires active researcher participation. The rebroadcaster (a Physics AI project on Bittensor) reads this as real-world confirmation of its thesis.
