OpenAI gpt-live-1 tip: control voice sessions from your backend via sideband connections
pbbakkum · x · 2026-10-21
A practical gpt-live-1 real-time voice API feature worth knowing: web/mobile clients connecting to voice should be treated as untrusted client-side code, but your app backend can open a sideband connection to control the session — e.g. responding to function calls — without proxying traffic. Sideband connections can attach at session start or any time using just the session id, multiple sidebands are allowed, and the same mechanism is handy for live monitoring. Official docs are on the Server-side controls page.
