Stanford's Kundaje: genomic AI models must test cell-type specificity to expose real weaknesses
anshulkundaje · x · 2026-10-21
AI genomics researcher Anshul Kundaje reviewed a new genomic foundation model and flagged a key evaluation gap: standard metrics like per-experiment performance across the genome and counterfactuals (variants, E2G links) fail to reveal model weaknesses. Most current models struggle to predict how chromatin activity and expression vary across cell contexts. He recommends explicitly benchmarking cell-type-specific prediction, calling improved cross-cell-type and cross-individual generalization the key axis for progress in genomic models.
