a16z: Superhuman AI hardware design is the easy part — manufacturing is the hard one
a16z · x · 2026-10-21
a16z amplifies Kyle Vogt's article "Superhuman Hardware Design Is The Easy Part," arguing AI is on track to become a superhuman hardware designer but design is only the start. The bits-to-atoms interface is lossy at every level: sourcing off-the-shelf parts (a 2006 Falcon 1 engine test was delayed by one capacitor stocked 6,000 miles away), custom parts needing master machinists to translate CAD, assemblies where every part can meet its drawing and still not fit, outside vendors (SpaceX employs 591 people with supply chain titles), and scaling it all to a million units. AI may excel at defining the platonically ideal part but struggle with design for manufacturing — points that are easy to build, procure, and cheap.
