OpenAI researcher: molecular discovery must jointly optimize performance and manufacturability
shyamalanadkat · x · 2026-10-21
OpenAI's Shyamal Anadkat argues that molecular discovery and manufacturing feasibility are optimized separately today, creating enormous waste: an ideal molecule may be impractical to synthesize or scale, while a slightly less performant one could be far cheaper and more reliable. He calls for better oracles that jointly optimize utility = f(performance, synthesis, cost, scale, safety).
