3Blue1Brown hails mathematicians' dialogue on whether AI will end the math profession
3blue1brown · x · 2026-10-21
Grant Sanderson (3Blue1Brown) enthusiastically recommends a long dialogue, "The Dialectical Theorem," between Rutgers' Alex Kontorovich and UVA's Thomas Koberda, saying he cannot find a single flaw and will send it to every PhD student and postdoc.
The conversation tackles the spreading belief among grad students that "math is solved" and quitting is rational. It proceeds in three stages: whether mathematics will persist as a paid human profession; what expertise institutions will actually hire for; and how PhD training should adapt accordingly. Kontorovich admits being deeply worried about jobs for human mathematicians. The article is also on arXiv.
