Zuckerberg: Apple friction shaped Meta's $200B all-in AI bet on owning the full stack
fortune · reddit · 2026-10-21
Fortune reports Zuckerberg greenlit Meta's AI buildout—up to $200 billion—knowing it was an enormous risk before any proof it would work.
The story traces his full-stack obsession to two decades of friction with Apple and Google: Facebook's 2013 workaround around Google Play (banned by Google), and Apple's 2019 shutdown of a Facebook "Research" app that paid users, including teens, up to $20/month for sweeping phone data access.
"One of my formative experiences has been building our services constrained by what Apple will let us build," Zuckerberg wrote in 2024. Owning the stack, he told Collison, is "less about wanting to own a platform for its own sake. It's about being able to build the best things."
