LF Research: GenAI halves open source coding time, but 25% of PRs are AI slop
nordicinst · x · 2026-10-21
A new Linux Foundation Research report (sponsored by Red Hat) on GenAI in open source development finds:
- 59% of maintainers report growing contributions, but an estimated 25% of incoming PRs are low-quality "AI slop";
- GenAI boosts productivity by up to 50% for contributors and maintainers across all OSS task types;
- The findings call for stronger AI governance: clear contribution policies, standardized attribution and verification, and continued investment in human mentorship.
