Respan (YC W24) launched an open-source Rust AI gateway built around a tiny core where everything—providers, protocols (MCP, voice), modalities, fallbacks, PII redaction, smart routing—is a plugin. The team previously wrapped LiteLLM for thousands of orgs, with wrapper code exceeding 100k lines, until a routine LiteLLM upgrade caused intermittent connection failures this January. Inspired by Nginx, they redesigned the gateway so features can be added without breaking the core.
