Fortnow: papers where AI drives the proof should disclose it on page one
fortnow · x · 2026-10-20
Complexity theorist Lance Fortnow argues that if AI is the main driver of a paper's proof, with authors acting as prompters and verifiers, that must be disclosed on the first page, in the abstract, or as a title footnote — not buried at the end. Otherwise authors are claiming research that isn't quite their own. He adds self-deprecatingly that maybe all papers will soon be AI-powered with humans as prompters and verifiers — "talk about interactive proofs!" (a pun on the complexity-theory term).
