We replaced our docs platform's MCP server with FrontMCP — lessons building a docs MCP
DavidAntoon · reddit · 2026-10-20
The maintainer of FrontMCP, an open-source TypeScript framework for MCP servers, explains how they replaced their docs platform's MCP server with one they built. Key points:
- One snapshot per release: each release gets a git tag, built into Markdown pages, section/full-text search and API indexes (current release: 178 pages, 3,662 sections, 4,737 API entries; 11 releases served). Agents call resolveversion first, with the lockfile winning over package.json ranges.
- Purpose-built tools replace what agents did with grep/tree/head: searchdocs, getpage, lookupapi, getexample, whatschanged, resolveversion.
- Hard-won lessons: MCP endpoints can't be 301-redirected (POSTs aren't followed); dropping code blocks from the search index cut it from 5.5MB to 3MB with no quality loss; avoid duplicate text/structuredContent payloads; the server needs 27ms CPU so Workers Free's 10ms cap doesn't fit; rate-limit at the edge (120 req/min per address) not per-isolate; treat tool names as an API with snapshot tests failing the build on breaking changes.
Listed in the official MCP Registry as dev.frontmcp.mcp/frontmcp, no key needed.
