Metis Reasoning launches with The Age of Reasoning white paper on evidence-grounded AI reasoning

Thore Graepel has founded Metis Reasoning with a team of researchers, mathematicians and robotics experts, pursuing a new approach to general and embodied AI reasoning. Alongside the launch, the company published a white paper, The Age of Reasoning, by Graepel, David S. Berman, Michael A. Warren and Piers Ingram.
Key claims:
- Diagnoses the root cause of LLM reasoning failures and, inspired by AlphaGo, proposes an architecture using learned reasoning strategies to achieve an explicitly represented epistemic state
- Claims are accepted only when warranted by evidence; reducing uncertainty is an independent objective measuring epistemic progress
- Reasoning is modeled, via Hintikka's conception, as a game between an inquirer and nature, modeled on the scientific method
- Reasoning can be learned from experience while knowledge, the substrate of reasoning, can be verified and scaled independently
- The resulting system reasons from first principles, provides auditable evidence-grounded reasoning traces, and grows more efficient over time
Graepel discussed these ideas at NVIDIA GTC in Berlin.
