Compute-as-UBI: what happens when everyone has an agent earning money for them?
flowersslop · x · 2026-10-20
The author imagines ChatGPT autonomously doing enough digital work to pay your rent within a year at $20/month — then pushes further: if everyone has a money-earning agent and work is finite, do agents hire agents? Does the economy become everyone competing with their share of global compute? That's effectively UBI — not cash, but compute that earns it. Personal agents may find better work than OpenAI's own fleet because they understand your circumstances, and compute-UBI sidesteps the nightmare of distributing global payments (how much for Burkina Faso vs Helsinki?). The future of UBI may be everyone owning a small team of AI agents that earns and manages money for them.
